Dreams for the future & Looking back
I aspire to attend graduate school and earn an MFA in Writing. With an MFA, I wish to become an English professor and teach the next generation of writers. My academic and work experiences at Loras have prepared me to fulfill my dreams. My Educational Psychology class, for example, introduced me to several core principles of effective teaching and learning, much of which I incorporated in my co-teaching PowerPoint presentation. Also, my J-Term course taught me to appreciate the revision process, even if the process causes me to doubt my writing abilities. After I take a brief hiatus from school after I graduate, during which time I plan on writing and sending out more short stories, I plan on applying to graduate school. My experiences at NICC and Loras have taught me, in part, that I will never be fully ready for future hurdles. Yet, I can prepare myself the best I can, using the lessons I’ve learned and the teachers I’ve befriended as valuable resources after graduation.
Before I transferred to Loras and before I enrolled at NICC, I sought out to become the most authentic person I could be. I then treated the college classroom as a place where I could one day express myself in without feeling dumb and unimportant. During my college career, I aimed to make the classroom an environment where I could use active learning and reflective thinking to transform myself from a naïve high school graduate into an empowered adult. Through moments of reflection and active learning, I learned to cherish and exemplify my thoughts from within and outside the classroom, whether as a student, writing tutor, or editor.
I have broken through old emotional and intellectual barriers. Still, I still have much to learn about being an adult, a future educator, and successful short story writer. But my time at NICC and Loras have given me the tools to help me grow both as a reflective and active learner. I have grown my confident in myself, and I have developed a deeper value in my experiences at NICC and Loras. Now I am looking forward to future challenges and the profusion of future opportunities waiting for me after graduation.
