Active Learner, REflective Thinker, Writing Major
I love to expand my perception of the world and become more attuned to the complexities of humankind. That is, I love to be a student of the world. One of the most important times of my life have been my collegiate career. Over the last four and a half years, I have cultivated a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a successful college student. Specifically, my time at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Loras College has helped me grow into a more self-aware, personable, and learned human being. For example, my dedication to school and writing have helped me to branch out of my comfort zone: I ultimately became a writing tutor at both the NICC Writing Center and Loras College Writing Center, and Poetry Editor at Catfish Creek, a national undergraduate literary magazine. My time at NICC and Loras have instilled in me a greater desire to excel.
In fact, Loras College strives to make each of its students excel in four key areas, otherwise known as dispositions. Two of the four Loras Dispositions I have grown most significantly in are active learning and reflective thinking. Through active learning and reflective thinking, I have become better prepared to face future challenges. I plan on one day matriculating to graduate school and becoming a writing teacher. Even though I am a Creative Writing major, I do not want to be perceived as a mere “creative writer,” a person who knows only how to write clever poems and short stories. I have written many creative works, including the story “Our Semester with Maxine Fischer,” which the magazine Clarion accepted in late-2016. I am proud of “Our Semester” and all the other creative works I completed for class. Still, I refuse to limit my literary abilities simply because I prefer to write poems and stories over academic essays. My colligate experiences have convinced me to think of myself more than just a creative writer. I more so identify myself as an adaptable writer, a person with a wide array of talents in the English field and beyond.
The effect my experiences at NICC and Loras had on me should never be questioned. If it weren’t for NICC and Loras, I would not have become a more empathetic student in a community of passionate learners. I have grown into a more experienced Writing major at NICC and Loras, most notably by using my creativity and ingenuity to create diverse projects, from reflection papers to PowerPoint presentations. Many key projects demonstrate how much I have developed both as an active learner and reflective thinker. This academic and personal development has been a four-year journey, starting after I completed high school near the top of my class.
